# Recall

> context, ask and search, and which one to use.

There are three ways to get something back out of a memory. Most apps want the first.

- [context()](https://docs.geniffy.com/recall/context): A block of text for your own prompt, one memory per line, each with where it came from. When nothing bears on the question it says so.
- [ask()](https://docs.geniffy.com/recall/ask): An answer in words from the memory only, with the memories behind it, or a plain message when nothing supports one.
- [search()](https://docs.geniffy.com/recall/search): The memories that best match, ranked, with no judgement on them. No model call, so it is the fastest.
- [When nothing is known](https://docs.geniffy.com/recall/when-nothing-is-known): What context and ask return when nothing bears on the question, and why there is no setting to tune.

## Which one to use

| Call | What you get | Judges relevance | Model call |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `context(question)` | A block of text for your own prompt, one memory per line, each with its source | Yes | Yes |
| `ask(question)` | Our answer in words, and the memories behind it | Yes | Yes |
| `search(q)` | The memories that best match, ranked | No | No |
